Pineapples and Trophies

Have you noticed the tine pineapple on top of the Wimbledon trophy? There’s kind of a history there, according to some it’s the representation of a tradition among English sailors. A long time ago English sailors would put pineapples on their gateposts whenever they were home from a lengthy voyage. Not that sure why tennis trophies were associated with English voyagers but it is.

A Three Day Tennis Match

On record, the longest ever match took place between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut at Wimbledon back in 2010. It was an incredible match with scores of 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (7), 7-6 (3) and 70-68 where Isner emerged as the champion. Overall, the game lasted for 11 hours and 5 minutes; the entire time was spread out in 3 days.

34 Minutes to the Trophy

The opposite of the unbelievable length of the Isner-Mahut match is the quickest Glam Slam final. During the match between Steffi Graf and Natalia Zvereva back in 1988, it only took a short 34 minutes for Steffi Graf to take home the trophy; it was a 6-0, 6-0 win.

Love in Tennis

‘Love’ is the term we use to describe a zero in the world of tennis. There are those that say that it came from the French term “l’oeuf’ meaning ‘egg’ or zero. Another potential origin of the term is the Dutch expression “iets voor lof doen” which means “there’s no stake in the game.”
